Water Polo TRAINING

Trials to join the water polo teams take place early in Michaelmas term (October), or contact the captains to join at some other time of the year.

The teams train 2-3 times a week, with one swimming session and two waterpolo sessions each week. The swimming session is generally combined, and players often go for brunch after weekend training sessions. These sessions are organised outside regular lecture hours so that no one has to miss them for academics. Matches are expected to occur about once every week, though the tempo will vary, and our away matches involve a maximum drive of 2 hours.

An additional swim set or dry-land work out is encouraged, and several small groups often meet up to complete it at a time that suits them.

Training location can vary year on year, but is generally either the Leys school pool or at Abbey leisure centre for water polo sessions, with swimming sessions sometimes taking place at Parkside pool.

Training Camp

Every winter the Water Polo squads travel abroad to train against high quality players in preparation for the important matches that occur in Lent Term. Generally the trip begins soon after New Year to end just before the next term starts. Recent destinations have included Malta, Rijeka, Budapest and Barcelona.

The tour provides a great opportunity for members of both teams to get to know each other better, and allows players to really develop their skills without the academic deadlines present during term time.
